The City and The City

The mapped outlines of walls dividing some people from others, whites from non-whites, the rich from the poor, the strong from the weak, became the subject of the series The City and The City(2023–24). Their background consists of abstract watercolour maps. Broadly speaking, walls can be divided into two categories: those that separate people who have lived next to one another for a long time, and those designed to stop migration. This series focuses on walls within cities, that is, walls that primarily divide neighbours. The paintings in Walking Through Walls  are based on a map of a military operation in the city of Nablus, which involved moving through the walls of the city. These works form a counterpoint to both the subject of the series and the idea of the wall as a permanent barrier.

Walls separating states and border barriers will be the subject of the second series, Borderlines.
